Health services at Derby Open Access Centre have been found to be “good” by Government watchdogs – with some “outstanding” care given.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC rated the centre, in St Thomas Road, as good in all inspection categories for having safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led services.

And the quality of care for working age people was “outstanding” according to inspectors who have published their report following an inspection they did in December last year.

The centre became St Thomas Road Surgery, with an attached advice and support hub, in April this year.

Inspectors particularly praised the centre for:

  • ·having good patient feedback on how easy it is to make an appointment with a GP or nurse and providing easily understood patient information
  • being good at providing services for older people, people with long-term conditions, mothers, babies, children and young people
  • offering good care for people in vulnerable circumstances or who have poor mental health
  • having clear leadership and staff who understood assessed and managed risks to patients well
  • ·being well equipped with good facilities.
  • gives patients a way of speaking to reception staff in private if they choose to
  • puts a system in place to proactively identify patients who are caring for other so their needs can be assessed
  • makes information available in the waiting area in a way that patients can take away with them.

Another example of “outstanding” practice also highlighted in the report was an outreach programme where seasonal sessions are held in community venues such as school halls, two to three times a month to make it easier for patients to access care like flu vaccinations or health checks.

To carry on improving inspectors recommended the surgery:

NHS Southern Derbyshire Clinical Commissioning Group employed OneMedicalGroup to run the centre and continues to employ them to run the surgery and the advice and support hub.

Kate Brown, director of planning and primary care development for NHS Southern Derbyshire Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “It’s great to know this surgery is offering good – and even some outstanding – patient care.

“I’d like to congratulate everyone involved on their success.”

Rachel Beverley-Stevenson, Chief Executive of OneMedicalGroup, said: “We’re delighted with this CQC rating.

“We’re proud of our staff and services and grateful to patients for their involvement and support in the work we do to keep them healthy, happy and well.”

Jennie Brailsford, operations manager at St Thomas Road Surgery, said: “We’re proud of this rating and plan to carry on the good work being done by working in partnership with patients to make sure local people get the best services.”
