Retired nurse thanks NHS for saving her life

A Repton pensioner who served the NHS for 40 years has thanked it for saving her life and restoring her husband’s health.

Christine Thorne, aged 74, was among hundreds of patients paying tribute nationwide to mark the NHS’ 65th birthday on Friday (5 July).

Christine was diagnosed with the highest grade malignant skin melanoma 15 years ago and, as a former nurse, she understood its seriousness.

She said: “The NHS pulled out all the stops but, even after surgery and skin grafts to remove the cancer, I was convinced I was going to die.

“However, thanks to the wonderful NHS treatment and five years of check-ups, I’m still here to tell my story.”

She had cause to thank the NHS again last year when 78-year-old husband Richard had his shoulder replaced. She said it had been causing him “dreadful pain” for years after he smashed it in a parachuting injury while serving in the Armed Forces.

Now, he is pain free and can swing his arm around like a youngster.

Christine said that Richard’s treatment while in hospital was second to none and that he was indebted to the NHS for the excellent work of its staff.

She started her nurse training in 1956 in a large psychiatric hospital in Burntwood, Staffordshire before transferring to Burton-on-Trent Hospital. At Burton, she was the first married woman to win the hospital’s Gold Medal for consistently excellent practical and theoretical work. It was the last time the medal was ever awarded.

She finally retired as a senior nurse at Bretby Orthopaedic Hospital.

Her mother was a psychiatric nurse for years while her daughter is a health visitor. Her son is a consultant physicist in Surrey while her son-in-law is a senior physicist at the Royal Derby Hospital.
