GPs harness ICT to improve patient care

GPs responsible for the care of 525,000 patients will soon have a shared view of comments, compliments and complaints across their 57 practices.

NHS Southern Derbyshire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), which plans and buys healthcare in and around Derby, has bought a new system called DatixWeb which will allow all practice staff to record quality concerns and service issues in the same way.

The system will hopefully go live in April. DatixWeb is currently being trialled by GPs including Dr Ian Lawrence, from Hannage Brook Medical Centre, Wirksworth.

Dr Lawrence said: “This investment will make it much easier for healthcare professionals to record their concerns – and those of patients – and to identify areas for improvement.

“Because the system is easy to use and requires minimal training, it will encourage GPs and practice nurses to get feedback from patients during consultations. DatixWeb will enable us to share not only patients’ concerns but also the best practice that already exists in Southern Derbyshire. In that way, DatixWeb will play an important role in helping us provide first-class care.”

As the programme is web based, there is no software for the CCG to buy or maintain.

The system cost £8,000 to buy and will cost £8,000 a year to run, a £2,000 saving on the existing arrangement for recording issues and concerns.

Dr Sheila Newport, Chair of NHS Southern Derbyshire CCG, added:

“This investment demonstrates our commitment to making best use of modern IT to improve patient care. DatixWeb uses simple web forms that will save time for clinicians recording issues and concerns. Another advantage is that the system will ease strain on our IT staff as they’ll have to spend minimal time supporting it.

“DatixWeb will allow us to dispense with other ways of noting patient comments, and having a single view of information will make it easier for us to learn from each other.”
