A healthy day for the public in Newhall

South Derbyshire residents are being invited to a special health awareness day on 21st August at Newhall Village Hall from 1pm – 4pm. The event is being organised by Newhall Surgery’s Patient Reference Group to help local people of all ages to improve their health and take part in fun activities.

Everyone attending can have a go at the ‘vendablenda’ where they can make a free fruit smoothie by pedalling an exercise bike. Children can enjoy games such as hopscotch, ‘cover the coin’ and ‘black out’. There will also be a table top sale and refreshments, with any proceeds being shared equally between Macmillan Cancer Support; Air Ambulance; the Alzheimer’s Society and the Salvation Army.

People attending the event can benefit from a free health check with special advice available on oral health and for people living with a long term condition. The Derbyshire Stop Smoking Service will be on hand to talk to people about the support that can be provided to help them stop smoking.

Members of the Council’s public health team will also be available to give people more information on Waistwise - an exercise and weight management GP referral programme that helps patients to achieve a healthier lifestyle by increasing their physical activity levels and improving their nutrition choices.

Paula Sharpe, Practice Manager at Newhall Surgery, said:

“We hope that as many people as possible will come along, have fun and benefit from all the healthy activities we have available. We would especially like to thank our Patient Reference Group for all their hard work and commitment in organising this event and producing all the excellent publicity materials. The Group has worked tirelessly on behalf of all patients at the surgery. Thanks to their superb fundraising efforts they have purchased many useful items for the surgery including an Electrocardiogram and a defibrillator for our new site No.50 Newhall Surgery.”

Newhall Surgery is a member of NHS Southern Derbyshire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) which is responsible for the health of local people in South Derbyshire. Commenting on the event, Dr Buk Dhadda, Chair of the South Derbyshire locality of NHS Southern Derbyshire CCG, said:

“This health awareness day is an ideal opportunity for people who want to talk to health professionals about improving their lifestyle. The activities show that fitness can both be fun and rewarding too, especially if you try the vendablenda!  We are hoping to work with other GP Practices in the area to hold similar events in the future.

“We are delighted to have such a committed group of patients who are helping us to connect with people in our communities. Most of our GP practices now have a patient participation group which allows patients to work with the practice to ensure services are meeting the needs of local patients. We are always looking for more patients to join, so please contact your local surgery for more details.

“The CCG also has a health panel where people with an interest in local health issues can register to become a member. Anyone interested in joining the health panel can call 01332 868677 or email enquiries@southernderbyshireccg.nhs.uk
